July 5/11  "Fireworks/Metallic - Flower Sampler"

Created: July 2, 2011
Modified:

Size: 12"w x 12"h

This weeks theme is Fireworks or Metallic - for some reason I read it as flowers... But as it turns out I do have something metallic in there - the cola flower made from a cola can and the flourishes made from metallic gold cardstock. Sheesh!!

I've wanted to make a sampler for a while now and finally "got around to it..." I've been making and trying out various floral designs as I come across them on the web etc. The trouble is, I make them and then I forget about them. But now I have the sampler and I can remember.

I also used a Quotes Mark quote from Quietfire Design. It's one I use a lot.

I used a 12 x 12 Bazzill monochrome black cardstock for the base. I added a few colored squares or the parchment colored strip to make those flowers pop a bit more.  I die cut the flourish/leaves from gold metallic (Heartfelt Creations "Belle Rose").

I will link up to pages where I originally made the flower for more detailed instructions.

Cone flower: I didn't use any magazine pages on this one. It's done with some decorative light weight cardstock I made recently. I also didn't cone the bottom row as tightly as the row above.

Crêpe Flower: This is the first time I made this flower, but it's based on flowers I see in stores. Punch out a bunch of circles and following the grain of the crêpe, put some glue at the bottom edge and pinch. Then using your thumb, shape the bowl of the petal. Set aside and do all the rest. The outer layers are 1" circles and the inner section are 3/4" circles. Put a bit of glue on the upper edge of each petal with the tip of a bamboo skewer, then scoop into some glitter (Stampendous Light Copper) and allow to dry. Assembly - punch out a 3/4" white cardstock circle, put a bead of glue from the edge to about half way into the circle. Start adhering the petals overlapping them slightly. Do a second row, then add more glue and do the small petals. Add a large rhinestone.

Pinched circle flower: Another flower I haven't done before. I smeared some white cardstock through Distress inks (Mustard Yellow, Barn Door, Dried Marigold) on my craft mat that was also misted with water. Allowed to dry. Punched out 3/4" circles, slit them to almost the center, then overlapped them and adhered the edges with a dab of glue. When dry, pinched the overlapped area. Punched out a 3/4" circle and put glue all over, then assembled them overlapping slightly. continued to the center. allowed to dry. Pierced a hole in center and added the floral stamen.

Newsprint/book page flowers:

Cola flower: I die cut the flowers segments using Tim's Tattered Flowers Sizzix die, ran the bottom one through with a Cuttlebug D'Vine Swirls folder and colored with Alcohol inks. the second layer I left as is in silver. The top layer is the cola side. attached them with a large red brad and onto a small cardstock circle.

Folded sewn flower:

Singed scallop strip flowers: I folded a piece of polyester white fabric a bunch of times, then cut a large scalloped edge on one side. Colored the material with Adirondack Colorwash Raisin, Glimmer Mists Red Velvet, and ran a Distress Pad Mustard Seed in the open areas. Misted well with water, then dried. Held the edge over a candle flame (careful it can catch fire very easily so use safety measures) until the fabric curled. Did a running stitch and gathered then joined the edges together. Adhered it to a punched circle with Golden's Extra Heavy gel medium. I find adhering these types of flowers onto cardstock, makes it easier to then add it to a project with just some regular glue.

Punched border petal flower:

Singed Circles flowers: I used distress pads in Mauve Velvet & Tattered Rose and water to color the fabric. The center is a mini pom-pom of black embroidery floss.

Water Lily flower:

Ribbon flowers: Originally demoed by Becca Feekan

The top flower:

The bottom flower: the one here was done with a mauve/rose & a pale blue gauze ribbon

Coiled Flowers

Net flowers: I colored the netting with Distress pads Blue jeans, Broken China and Dusty Concord. Cut and folded a strip in half lengthwise, did a running stitch and gathered it up. Adhered it to a small cardstock circle with Gel Medium.
