Thomas Hoyer Class "Ruling Pen - Beyond The Rules" (May 26 & 27, 2008)
Created May 30, 2008

The Watercolor Letters was a half day class on Sunday afternoon. and I wish we had more time for this one too. I loved all the different ways of applying color.

Thomas liked this one and said he never thought of this combination to create a letter, the light background and the darker letter on top. He showed the class this combo. I was very proud. I used the Haff 629 with Ecoline watercolors. Did a thick letter with the lighter color and waited till it was totally dry. Then went in again and did a thinner letter with a darker blue. I think I used turquoise and then blue violet.

This was done double loading the ruling pen. Small pipettes were invaluable. Thomas uses small spill proof needle nose bottles that are used in hospitals. Will have to get some of those eventually. I think I used the same turquoise and some reddish brown and then sprinkled some Perfect Pearls Sunflower yellow (which is like a gold color) in the bottom section.

This was done with the Haff 629 and warm red Ecoline, then another color dropped in in the bottom section. Can't remember what color I used. also all the letters had to touch at some point

This was another style of lettering. When the letter is done go through or close to it with the edge of the pen. Really creates a nice vibrancy and energy to the lettering. I used a nice warm red Ecoline and then when still slightly wet went in for my thin lines with light green gouache with gold powder. I like this style, will play with it some more.
