ID: Piano Hinge Book #4 "Perfect Pear"

Journal only (closed): approx 2"w x 5"h x 1" thk.
Journal only (open): approx 4.5"w x 5"h
approx 7"h from top of pear stem to bottom of cover

This is my fourth piano hinge book. The difference with this one are the signature pages. I used a 1 page signature for my main spine page and glued a page to either side of the main page, off setting the page by the depth of the cuts for the piano hinge area. This allowed me to have more pages and the pages lay flat. I used a gold marble stationary paper having the marble pattern run vertically which gives the illusion of the flesh of the pear.

I used natural colored jute. I wanted the rough texture to simulate the stem. I added a brown paper leaf. This book does not stand free. It either needs to hang or lay flat.

I love the way this book falls open. It reminds me of a pear cut in half and sitting on a plate.

I used a very strong book board (Davey board) and painted it in acrylic washes of golden yellows and browns, removing some with a tissue after each application, until I got the color I wanted. I then spattered some brown paint. I wrote my quote with a 1.5 Parallel pen and my own mix of brown acrylic ink. When the book was bound, I ran a walnut stain stamp pad over the spine edges to dirty them up a bit and mimic the core of the pear. The feel of the covers was a bit rough and matte feeling, so I put my finger into the Dorland's wax and rubbed it over the covers, then wiped it with a tissue paper. The covers now feel like the pear's skin and feel great. This was the first time I used this wax and was amazed.

Words: There are only ten minutes in the life of a pear when it is perfect to eat. Ralph Waldo Emerson

This is a 7 signature book.
