ID: Caterpillar Open Spine Book  "Morph"

approx 3.5"w x 5.5"h

Well I said I wanted to try more than one color of caterpillar binding and have a fatter body. This is the result of my 2nd try.

I cut 4 signatures of 4 pages each from Arches Text Wove paper in the shape of a large butterfly. The signatures were a little dull for an open spine book so I decided to use some of my hand decorated papers I keep in my stash and cut smaller versions of the butterfly (painted in red & gold) to use as cover sheets and middle sheets (so the black and red waxy thread of the caterpillar wouldn't discolor the paper) for each of the signatures. I used white mat board for the covers and cut it in the same shape as the large butterfly but added about 1/4" on all edges as well as small sized tabs for the open spine area which are covered with black book cloth. I sponge painted the covers with Daniel Smith's Gold & Venetian Red gesso and used a Krylon Gold Leaf pen to put a border on the outside of the cover and edge the papers as well. I wrote the word "Metamorphosis" with a black Zig marker then shadow outlined it with a gold metallic pen.
