When I was making my Piano Hinge journals last year, I had said I wanted to make one with knitting needles. I went out and bought them and they sat... Well today I finally got around to making the journal. And it incorporates good things I learnt while making the previous models.

The paper I used to cover the journal is scanned images of sweaters I designed and knitted over the years, printed on my Epson printer onto Arches Text Wove paper.

The two purple colors used for the piano hinges are basic cardstock, and the one attached to the covers is reinforced with linen hinging tape. These hinges only go a little way into the journal and are used to hold the signatures. I glued a signature to each hinge protrusion. There are 7 hinges, making it 14 signatures of 3 sheets each folded in half equaling 12 pages per signature or 168 pages in total. Pages are made from cream toned LBS end sheet papers from Columbia Mills. Pics below show the hinge in more detail.

I added metallic beads to the top and bottom of the knitting needles both as a decorative element and to hole the needles in place. I used 4 ply waxed linen thread (Victorian Rose & Purple) for the top and bottom sewing sections. The page signatures were stitched - pamphlet style using 2 ply white waxed linen thread. I then added a bunch of funky knitting yarns.

You can see the signatures attached to each side of a hinge protrusion allowing the journals to lay flat for easy writing which is not the case for a basic Piano Hinge book. It's only because of my modifications that the journal can lay flat.
