ID: Caterpillar #2 Open Spine Book

approx 3.5"w x 5.5"h

I'm still in love with this type of binding. This is the 3rd one that I have made.

I cut 4 signatures of 4 pages each from a Arches Text Wove paper in the shape of a large butterfly. The signatures were a little dull for an open spine book so I decided to use some of my hand decorated papers I keep in my stash and cut smaller versions of the butterfly (painted in black & gold) to use as cover sheets and middle sheets (so the black and red waxy thread of the caterpillar wouldn't discolor the paper) for each of the signatures. I used white mat board for the covers and cut it in the same shape as the large butterfly but added about 1/4" on all edges as well as medium sized tabs for the open spine area which are covered in black book cloth. I painted the covers with Daniel Smith's Gold gesso for the outside and their Venetian Red gesso on the inside. Sponged a scalloped shape design on the covers in a metallic red & Golden's Bronze. Wrote the quote with Dr Martin's iridescent black and a script nib. I edged both the covers and the paper with a Krylon Gold Leaf pen.

Words: What the caterpillar calls the end of the world the master calls a butterfly. Richard Bach

The
booklet lies flat and stays closed in the closed position. I've left enough space to add a few pictures of butterflies etc. I also like the way it stands in the open position.
