Gladiola BD card
Created: August 19, 2011 A good friend has a birthday this month and she's also a calligrapher, so I thought I better do something with calligraphy for her... It's so rare I do that these days, but I am very happy with the way it turned out. It's using a little of what I'll be teaching in Edmonton in October, so figured I'd better practice too... The flower for August is Gladiola - learn something new all the time. Had to Google that to find out. |
So I practiced my lettering on some
Genoa bond paper with Sumi ink and my Nikko G nib. Everything looked
good. So I did it on 110# cardstock and that worked out OK too,
except for my last "y" which just kind of blobbed and didn't look
very nice. So I decided to try some cardstock I picked up a while
back, meant for Copics apparently, although I didn't like it for
that, so I put it in my drawer... AND it bleeds using Sumi ink, so I
guess it's going back in my drawer. Now normally I would have
ditched it, but for some perverse reason, I liked the squiggly lines
I got. Then did my shading using Pitt Pastel pencils and a blending
stump, then did a bit of shadowing with an HB pencil and a touch of
blending again. On the top letters I used two tones of yellow, light
and deep. On the sentiment I used various colors. I really like the
way they turned out. I then drew in the gladiolas in and around the words. Colored them with Derwent Inktense watercolors and moved around with a water brush (don't like the cardstock for this either). When dry, I sponged some Distress Broken China around the edges, added glitter (Glitter Ritz micro fine glitter "Royal Blue"). l put some Liquid Pearls "Cantaloupe" on the stamens and when dry, dotted with a black Identi pen.
The envelope was made from Genoa Bond paper so I could write with my Sumi ink. Regular envelopes just bled... I stamped the flower with black, colored with Prisma colors, sponged Distress Broken China around the edges. Added yellow colored pencil to the letters, added an HB pencil stroke in that and then blended with a paper stump. The lettering is a funky kind of "Curlz" font. |
