Thomas Hoyer Class "Watercolor Letters" (May 25, 2008) & Beyond The Rules (May 26 & 27, 2008)
Created May 30, 2008

The Watercolor Letters was a half day class on Sunday afternoon. and I wish we had more time for this one too. I loved all the different ways of applying color.

Thomas kindly lent me his Ruling Writer for this piece. I had tried doing it with the Haff 629, but my letters. I used very diluted Winsor & Newton white Designer Gouache for the first layer of oversized letters. Let that dry completely, then did my second layer of letters with Dr Martin's Bleed Proof white that was diluted a bit too much. I have now order a Ruling Writer and will try this piece again with a stronger white for the second set of letters. But even so, I like it.

I did a similar piece below but used gold powder in the white gouache. Didn't have enough contrast for this one either. But I like the first layer of lettering. The paper I used was Arches Black which has a rough kind of surface similar to a 90# CP paper so the Ruling Writer skipped over the bumps.

Thomas did one of these on white paper, and I thought I'd try it on black. He liked it. I used the Haff 629 with Dr Martin's Bleed Proof white. Let dry completely then went into some negative areas using colored gouache that had gold powder floating in it.
