Loredana Zega - Brushed Romans & More

Lettering mostly done with Gouache

The gouache was thicker than buttermilk... and only the tip of our flat edge brush touched the paint. A lot of my gouache are Winsor & Newton which she doesn't recommend. On day 4 I started using Holbein gouache.

We did a ton of practicing which is definitely not my forte... So there is not hat many finished pieces - sigh. I've taken a lot of Roman classes and still don't really like doing them - just too tedious. C'est la vie., but she also had some Flame Script which I absolutely loved.

After practicing most of the day with the Romans, I was in a need to change my perspective.

I'm really like the dry brush effect we were getting in our Romans so thought I'd create a piece with the technique but using a lettering style I liked better.

I used FW acrylic ink, writing letters one on top of the other to spell out "More Calligraphy Art" on Arches Black Cover

In between practicing we did some dry embossing using both the negative and positive of the cut out designs. Needless to say I didn't use a Roman letter...

We created a cardboard cut out and adhered the positive pieces to a piece of tracing paper and did the same with the negative pieces. (that held the pieces all together...). After dry embossing I filled the outline shape with Quickie Glue and sprinkled with Stickles dry glitter "Diamond".

Went home that night and created this piece using my electronic cutter to cut out my design... this time using Roman lettering... Dry embossed on a basic black cardstock and hit the high points with Metallic Rub-Ons "Rosewood" using my finger.

At the same time I cut out the above piece I also cut out the individual letters and used them in class to create these 2 card fronts.

On the first one I added glitter and doodling in the dry embossed outlined letters.

On the 2nd one I hit the high points with the Rub On Metallics.

On both I added holly leaves and colored with Derwent inktense watercolor pencils.

I decided to bring in some Oriental paper and did some Flame Script lettering on the smooth side using the Holbein "Peacock Blue" gouache.

I wrote in the quote using a Zig Writer. I had started with Sumi Ink in my Parallel pen, but it started to bleed immediately (which I erased in photo editing...)

Loredana also showed us how to create a feather with dry brushing.

I wanted to find out the difference with dry brushing on the smooth side and the rough side. There was a bit more difference, but I like both effects. (sorry about the yellow splotch...)

I used Holbein "Geranium" and a mix of the geranium and the Peacock for the feather,

Using the Peacock Blue for this one on the rough side of the Oriental paper.

Again the feather has both colors on it.

Final exercise on day 4 was to create a multi layered Brush lettered piece using Romans. Of course I didn't catch all the instructions... and only layered multi letters on a single plain. So to make things stand out more, penciled in shading to create multiple layers. I used Holbein "Permanent White" on Stonehenge Aqua Black paper. The letters spell "So Nice"

What we were supposed to do was do a first layer in a very light color or tone and having no letters overlapping. The 2nd layer with a slightly darker color or tone again with no overlaying letters but overlaying letters over the 1st layer. The 3rd layer uses the darkest color or tone no overlying letters  but overlaying on the 1st and 2nd layer. I know sounds a little confusing but looks gorgeous on Loredana's piece.
