BVCG Words 2018

A future guild Journal: our editors asked everyone to choose a word from a list and create it calligraphically... My first inkling was a ladybug. 

 

ID: Birds
Size: 4"h x 8"w

On white no name brand calligraphy paper using a Kuretake Brush pen with black ink. Free form brush pen lettering. Feather (Carabelle Studio) stamped with Distress pads.

ID: Buck
Size: 6"h x 8"w

Black letter lettering (You Tube a la Uvulus1), 6.0 Parallel pen with Sumi ink. Detail brush shadow outline using Fine Tec "Bronze Original".

Buck antlers hand drawn, outlined with a Zig Writer and painted with the Bronze.

 

ID: Butterfly
Size: 4"h x 5"w

I created an alcohol ink background and inked the butterfly stamp using Alcohol Lift Ink and then stamped on my  an unknown brand calligraphy paper. The stamping is now waterproof...

Calligraphy done with a Nikko G pointed pen nib and Sumi ink in a hand called "Fickle".

Uncial lettering, 6.0 Parallel pen with Sumi ink, white detailing with a Sakura Gelly Roll pen on no name calligraphy paper.

Dragon hand drawn, colored with Derwent ProColour pencils.

ID: Eagles
Size: 6"h x 7.5"w

Funky lettering (a la Margaret Morgan as seen in L.A.R. 26.4) on noname brand calligraphy paper using a flat edge brush (Taklon 950 white1/4"), QoR watercolors (Cobalt Teal, Permanent Scarlet, Nickel Azo Yellow) and Schminke gold powder. When dry a 6.0 Parallel pen with Sumi ink to create the diamonds, then smaller inlaid diamonds with a gold gel pen.

Eagle hand drawn, inked with a Pentel pocket brush pen. Wing feathers with a pointed pen and Sumi ink.

 

 

ID: Grasshopper
Size: 6"h x 8"w

Funky lettering (a la Lisa Englebrecht's version of Chaz Bojorquez lettering) on Canson's Biggie 90# CP watercolor paper - smooth side using a flat edge brush (Taklon 950 white1/4"), various green QoR watercolors and Schminke gold powder.

Silhouette of grasshopper drawn and inked with Pentel Pocket Brush.

ID: Horses
Size: 5"h x 7"w

Funky lettering using a 6.0 Parallel pen, Sumi ink on Bogus Recycled Rough Sketch paper. White gel pen spots to mimic a pinto.

Horseshoe painted using Copic white ink mixed with water.

ID: Ladybug
Size: 9"h x 11.5"w

I created a large ladybug with watercolors. When dry coated it with Glossy Accents giving it a nice shine.

The lettering was done with a 1/2" flat edge watercolor brush and a red watercolor on a slightly textured cardstock in a Blackletter style. When dry went over it with a 6.0 Parallel Pen and Sumi ink.

ID: Leopard
Size: 5.5"h x 7"w

I used a couple circles from a die set and drew pencil lines. Calligraphy done with a 6.0 Parallel pen and Sumi ink in Italic style on an unknown brand calligraphy paper.

Used colored pencils to color in the negative areas of letters, then blending with a Lyra Splendour Blendor. Used a dark brown to outline the smaller circle.

Stamped the leopard (Deep Red) using Versafine "Toffee" and here and there with "Onyx Black".

 

ID: Mice
Size: 4"h x 6"w

Lettering a la Lisa Engelbrecht - Letterista style, using a flat edge 1/4 brush, Copic white opaque ink mixed with water on black cardstock.

Brickwork and opening and tail of mouse - he's too quick... painted with Finetec waercolors.

 

 

 

 

ID: Octopus
Size: 8"h x 9"w

Lettering created with water using a ruling pen then Ecoline inks dropped into the wetness (Turquoise Blue, Ultramarine Light, Blue Violet). Outline detail with a Superior Light Blue brush pen.

Octopus hand drawn and colored with a Superior orange brush pen.

ID: Turtles
Size: 5"h x 8"w

Monoline Lettering Pressure/Release on white cardstock with a 6B pencil.  Boxes shaded using a paper stump.

Turtle (Designs By Ryn) stamped using Distress pads.
