Resist Backgrounds  (July 2007)

These resist background ATC's were inspired with a technique mentioned on our ByHandArtist Yahoo groups by Beth who found it in Bernie Berlin's ATC book. She had done a few and I really liked the way they turned out.

So I got my gold Krylon leafing pen out and started playing (didn't bother using my other color pens). I used a Strathmore CP watercolor pad and drew abstract design (circles, donut shapes, grid patterns etc.) with the Krylon Pen. My Daniel Smith's watercolor tubes were lying on my desk, so I just grab those rather than my palette colors and lay washes of various colors in and around the patterns. When dry, I cut up the larger papers to create the ATC's and used coordinating colored markers to edge them. I have a few more larger papers still to cut up. One day.

Watercolor colors used: Lemon Yellow, Quinacridone Coral, Phthalo Turquoise & Interference Silver.

This was one of the donut shapes. I added the Peel Offs corner border and a holograph peel Off butterfly. added the words "Let your Spirit Fly" with various colors of gouache/gold leaf mix and a script type nib. Mounted it onto red cardstock.

Love the background on this one, the way it feathers out and the pastel type shades.

Another of the donut backgrounds. I added some eyelets in various colors and threaded some funky fibers through the holes and glued them to the back. Rubber stamped the words Art needs Passion (not sure of the maker) with a multi colored stamp pad and clear embossed it. Outlined it with a black micron pen. Mounted it onto green cardstock.

PS the rubber stamp originally was "Art needs Solitude" which I don't believe. So I cut off the word solitude. I had a similar style stamp for the word passion. So voila!

One of the grid patterns. I used a couple Asian stamps, the word for "Dream" (Prairie Rubber Stamps) done with gold stamp pad and gold embossing powder; and the flower stamp (Inkadinkado part of Asian Set) with a multi colored stamp pad and clear embossed. Mounted it onto bright yellow cardstock.

Donuts again. Making me hungry...

I added an aqua blue glitter as an inner circle in each donut shape. Rubber stamped the "Friend" quote with gold stamp pad and gold embossing powder. Mounted it onto aqua cardstock.

I like the look of this one too.

Grid pattern. This one I originally made for my online ATC A Month swap (theme was anything musical or the color yellow, both themes apply). Used an address sticker of a yellow rose and printed in the title of the song. Added yellow eyelets in each corner. Mounted it onto yellow cardstock.
