I accidentally came across this background technique when going through our Yahoo Messages and hit one from 2002, described by Charmaine S. Very simple. Use any substrate, scribble or apply areas of color with the oil pastels (leaving white areas is OK), then using a cotton ball or cloth or tissue and some turpentine (I used odorless mineral spirits), rub and blend the oil pastels.

NOTE: IF USING TURPENTINE USE IN WELL VENTILATED AREA.

Also rub on some Ranger's Perfect Pearls or Jacquard's Pearl Ex powders. Both give a nice sheen to areas.

I used cheap oil pastels "Arty". This one is done on white value cardstock using lots of yellows, some rusty red and a touch of an olive green. I used a Perfect Medium mini stamp pad and rubbed it on some of the areas then rubbed on my Pearl Ex powders (Blue Russet & Brilliant Yellow). Used a paddle punch to punch out my star shape and rubber stamped my quote (Quietfire Design "Light Tomorrow") with Brilliance Dew Drops  Pearlescent Crimson and Garnet embossing powder. Mounted it onto a gold metallic cardstock then onto a red cardstock.

These two ATCs are from the same background as above. I rubber stamped the Asian lady (Rubber Trouble "Asian" sheet#25-00) with Versamark "Perfect Plumeria" and colored her in with Tombow markers and my water brush mixture. The stamp pad ink also got blended into the colors. Mounted it onto a medium toned purple cardstock the rubber stamped my quote (Quietfire Design) with the same stamp pad and clear embossed it.

Rubber stamped my bamboo shoots (Old Island Prairie Rubber #455-E) with Versamark Dew Drops "Hint of Pesto" a couple of times. Then stamped my quote (Quietfire Design "As You Dream") with Pearlescent Crimson and clear embossing powder. Mounted on dark green cardstock.

The color combination for the next two are (some pinks, Ultramarine Blue and some violet with a touch of light green) done on Arches 140lb HP watercolor paper. I added a couple lines of a pale pink glitter and a row of Fashion Beadz "Pretty Pink" (beads in a clear glue mixture). Then glued down my seashells with Golden's soft gel medium. Wrote in my quote with a purple micron pen. Mounted it onto green cardstock.

Words: Today is a smooth white seashell, hold it close & listen to the beauty of the hours. Anon

See above for color combo. Words written with a green Zig marker. Mounted onto light green cardstock..

Words: Precious as a seashell, deeper that the sea - more eternal than the waves our love was meant to be.
